History - Belonging to the Toy Group, the Affenpinscher is one of the oldest known toy breeds. With a distinctive mustached muzzle, the Affenpinscher origin is clouded in uncertainty. Seen in Dutch paintings from the fifteenth century, this tiny breed adorned many a nobleman and noble lady’s lap.  Bred to kill rodents, this tiny dog is a formidable hunter and tireless tracker for anything rodent-sized found in his home. The breed is now found worldwide, but enjoys the most popularity in Germany. The AKC formally acknowledged the breed in 1936.

Appearance - The name translated means Monkey Terrier, sometimes called the Black Devil because of his mischievous streak. The Affenpinsher has an endearing personality. Because of his slight build, the Affenpinsher is an amiable lap dog and easily spoiled, loving to play with his master. He also excels in climbing and is an entertaining breed of dog to own.

Description - The Affenpinscher has a high energy level and is easily led into mischief. A dog curious about his surroundings, and investigating every nook and cranny of his home; it is helpful for his owner to be easy-going. Having an Affenpinscher is a sure route to quick laughter.

Although the Affenpinscher enjoys playing outdoors, he cannot survive living outdoors and does poorly in exile. He needs to be with his family; in the center of their attention to be happy, and a good long walk daily is all he needs in the exercise department.

The Affenpinscher loves to bark and is a good watchdog alerting to danger. He is somewhat reserved with strangers and not that easy to train. The stubborn streak often rears its ugly head.

The Affenpinscher needs to be groomed at least three times a week and left unbrushed, the dog will soon need a trip to the groomers to unsnarl his coat.

Ideal Owners: The Affenpinscher will suit owners with small backyards. The Affenpinscher are great companion dogs and thus will makes wonderful family pets. Regular walks are also required.

Other Names: Monkey Dog

Our dog Frank is energetic and always has kisses for you. Frank needs a place to run, and he will run and play inside if allowed to. He watches well and will bark warnings, but is not an aggressive attack dog. He mouses better than a cat and sheds very little. Very tolerant and trained easily once you established that you were the boss.
