History - The American Staffordshire Terrier (AmStaff) was first bred in England, then called Bull and Terrier dogs, was used in dogfights beginning in 1835. Orignally identical to the British Staffordshite Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier was selectively bred for greater height and weight and a bulkier build.

In its formative years the breed was also known as the Yankee Terrier, Half and Half or the American Bull Terrier. In 1936 it was formally accepted for registration into the American Kennel Club stud books as the "Staffordshire Terrier". However in 1972 this was changed to American Staffordshire Terrier to avoid confusion with the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

Appearance - The American Staffordshire Terrier is stockily built with a muscular body. It should give the impression of great strength. The coat should be short, glossy and stiff, requiring little grooming. It may be any color, but preferably not black and tan or liver or more than 80 percent white. Male American Staffordshire terriers will grow to 17 to 19 inches and weigh between 57 and 67 lbs. Females will grow to 16 to 19 inches and also weigh between 40 and 60 lbs.

Description - The American Staffordshire Terrier should never be confused with the American Pit Bull Terrier. Although both were originated from the same bloodline they are NOT one and the same dog. The AmStaff has been breed alone a different line than its predecessor. Breed more as a 'show' dog, American Staffordshire Terriers are intelligent, excellent guardians, great family dogs and will protect their masters' property with an air of authority.

Ideal Owners: The American Staffordshire Terrier is a good family dog and hence requires interaction with the owners. They are powerful dogs and if left unattended the American Staffordshire Terrier can become bored, unhappy or destructive. Give all the attention this dog deserves and they will repay you with love and loyalty

Life Expectancy: 11 years

Other Names: Amstaff

Color: Any color

As a 15 year Amstaff/Pitt Bull Terrier owner I can say I will never own any other breed of dog. Marley and Ziggy are both rescued animals who have proven to be loyal, affectionate companions. They are both male, love my three cats and have NEVER had an aggressive moment towards anyone. A strong ALPHA (me) makes a confident pack. Gigi

Over the past 13 years of owning, exhibiting and loving the American Staffordshire Terrier, I have yet to find a breed more loyal, human like, intelligent and low maintenance.

Sometimes this breed can get into the wrong hands. Responsible breeding and careful selection of future homes is the only way this problem can be solved. Be sure to always educate yourself prior to purchasing an Amstaff in both health and temperament.

Also realize what a HUGE responsibility it is to own one. Best of, Chrissy Lee Alleekennels.com
