The Basenji was developed in Africa for hunting and is one of the oldest breeds still in existence. Dogs of the Basenji type are found in ancient Egyptian art. The modern history of the breed traces to the early twentieth century, when specimens found in Zaire (then the Belgian Congo) were imported to England and later to North America.

The Basenjis coat is short and sleek. The color can be pure black and white, red and white, black tan and white with tan melon pips and mask, black, tan and white. The tail curls tightly over spine and lies closely to thigh with a single or double curl.

The Basenjis do not bark however they are not mute either. They make their own special noise of mixture of a chortle and a yodel. They make this noise when they are happy and range from a soft meow to a siren!

The Basenji is sensitive, extremely intelligent and is independent thinkers. If you do decide to get yourself Basenji puppies be fore warn, they are accomplished escape artists. Tree climbing is a specialty and jumping six-foot fences are nothing to clear.
