Bloodhound
History - A member of the Hound Group, the Bloodhound is known for his ability to track scent. The origins of this popular breed are sketchy at best, with no real documented proof of when the Bloodhound first made his appearance in the world. There are vague references to Bloodhounds being on the field in the Norman invasion at the Battle of Hastings, but nothing that could be pinned down. Bloodhounds made their appearance in America in the 1800’s. Although used in the slave trade to track down runaway slaves the Bloodhounds then were of mixed scent-hound heritage. Later, they would become key tools in prisons for guards tracking convicts. Although the Bloodhound is intent on the scent with his nose to the ground, once he finds what he is tracking, his only action is to bay loudly to bring others. The bloodhound is too gentle of a beast to attack anyone. Although the name Bloodhound originally gave people pause, the breed has proved its mettle time and again. Appearance - Bloodhounds are large dogs, with strong backs and powerful, deep and slightly arched loins. They have long, narrow heads with abundance of loose skin. They have thin ears that are soft to touch and falls in graceful folds. Eyelids are oval and should not obstruct the eye. Bloodhounds come in black and tan, liver and tan and red. Description - The Bloodhound is a stubborn dog and once on the trail of a scent, does not let up easily. Difficult to train obedience-wise, simply because his nose gets distracted, the bloodhound is nonetheless easy to train, doing what he does best, tracking scent. Gentle with small children, the Bloodhound has a tolerance that other dogs lack. Good with other small pets and dogs, the Bloodhound is a bit standoffish to strangers and their bark is more of a baying and can be quite startling at first. Used in hunting, law enforcement, border patrols and at airports this breed is known for its many successes in tracking. The Bloodhound drools a lot and does not tolerate heat or cold well. The sagging wrinkles on his face and jowls need to be cleaned daily. Ideal Owners: The Bloodhound needs an owner who love the outdoors and are willing to take the dog with them. These dogs are good with children (kids older than 10). Poor as guard dogs. These dogs are not suited for the elderly, infirm or disabled.
