A Boerboel is large, mastiff type dog breed from South Africa. The word boerboel is Afrikaans for "farmer's dog". The ideal height for male Boerboels is from 64-70cm at the shoulder. The height for bitches is usually 59-65cm.

Boerboels are intelligent, reliable and obedient, with a strong watchdog instinct. It is self-assured and fearless, but perspective to the needs of the family.

I am a first time Boerboel owner and I am very pleased. I have owned German Shepherds, 2 Dobermans (still have one) and a Rhodesian Ridgeback. I am a huge fan of protective breeds because I figure if I am going to take care of a massive dog, I might as well feel safe at the same time, right?

They are huge, my big girl weighs in at about 150 lbs. and if you are not a good dominant owner, they will overpower you with almost no effort on their part. If you start out training them correctly to begin with though, you will minimize your dominance struggles tremendously.

My Boerboel is excellent with my children and friends, but great with staring down and intimidating strangers. I never worry about my safety with her and my children can dress her up, ride her like a horse, and take her toys away and she never gets even mildly upset at them, but if someone she doesn't know comes near, she will not allow them near the children. My only advice to potential owners is that this is not a breed that can be allowed outside of your yard without a leash - they are TOO protective for that.

Do not get a Boerboel if you are not prepared to deal with an extremely strong and protective dog. They are an amazing breed if you are responsible with them, but a total liability if you insist on treating them like a lab or a Golden. Overall - great breed for experienced owners with protective and dominant breeds.

I am a dog behaviorist in the Sacramento area and own a six month old Boerboel. He is even tempered and intellegent. I do agree that this is a dog for experienced people only. Dominent by nature, these dogs require a confident calm owner/trainer.

I am a dog behaviorist with a Boerboel. They are wonderful dogs; very trainable, and excellant watchdogs. Any potential owner of this breed should have extensive experience with dealing with and training dominant dogs. A Boerboel will always challenge you and your authority. An experienced owner will be delighted by this intellegent and talented dog.

I see on a review by Shaun Ewing that a a boerboel weighs in at 60Kg , the average weight of a boerboel male should not weigh less than 75Kg , over here in South Africa they are excluded from competitions if the do weigh below 75Kg.They are exceptional dogs Brilliant watch dogs and extemely powerful , with a bite that exceeds that of all breeds. Here's a handy tip , NEVER get bitten by a Boerboel , what ever limb he bites will break, my dog broke my girlfriends forearm whilst just playing, he was 6 months old at the time.

HD is a problem in some dogs but seems to be less prevalent in the boerboel as opposed to other large breeds.

The Boerboel is a rare breed with a few established breeders outside of RSA. A large dog, >60 kg it is more suited to a large property than a condo/flat. There are some health issues, mostly HD, ED and vaginal hyperplasia, however the concerning buyer will ask for copies of the results of the hip and elbow testing. On the whole the Boerboel is a very healthy and active molosser. Very family orientated, excellent allround farmdog. Not suitable as a first dog.
