History - A member of the Sporting Group, the Brittany originated in the mid 1800’s in France. Woodcocks were the game of choice at that time, and the Brittany was bred by Frenchmen who loved the sport of hunting woodcocks, to excel in the fields, possess a keen nose and be tireless in the hunt.

Arriving in America in 1925 they were widely ignored, because American hunters were accustomed to working with dogs with tails. The Brittany is tailless. Regardless of the lack of a tail the AKC officially recognized the Brittany Spaniel in 1925.

It was discovered that these dogs are extremely obedient, willing to please and they excel in all the field trials. In 1934 the AKC further acknowledged the hunting prowess of this breed and dropped the spaniel out of the name.

Appearance - The Brittany is a medium-sized dog, graceful with long legs. Playful and energetic, it is better suited for a home or ranch rather than apartment living. The Britanny is well stocky, muscled, body hair is fine and dense with sparse feathering. Their coat color can be liver/white black or tricolored. It should not be curled or silky in texture.

Description - As long as you keep this dog mentally and physically engaged on a daily basis, you will not have any problem in keeping one. But left to themselves for to long a time or penned up and bored; the Brittany will become destructive rather quickly. Prone to barking, digging and tearing up items, this dog needs to be exercised, interacted with and put on the hunt in order to be happy.

A low-maintenance breed it’s major concern is giving the Brittany enough exercise to satisfy their hunting need.

Because of the high energy level, this dog is not well suited for small children, and is more than willing to come in out of the cold, rather than stay outside 24/7. Although alert for strangers, the Brittany is liable to lop a burglar in the face, rather than bite the hand.

Ideal Owners: Great as family pets, provided that they are given ample exercising (walks, agility, flyball)

Coat Color: White/orange, white/black, tricolor

Other Name: Epagneul Breton, Brittany Spaniel

Life Expectancy: 12-14 years
