History - This powerful, intelligent dog was developed over hundreds of years on game estates throughout England, and by the early 20th century attained its present shape and size, although until recently all bullmastiffs were the same color, brindle. This excellent camouflage color became less important as bullmastiffs were adopted as house pets and guard dogs, and today they can be brindle, fawn, red or fawn-red.

Developed to guard large areas of woodland from poachers and trespassers, the bullmastiff was bred to chase and pin down intruders without hurting them. Being a hybrid of the bulldog and the mastiff, this is a fast running dog which excels in stealthy night work, has the patience to sit in ambush, and can be trained to hold onto its prey.

Appearance - The bullmastiff is typically about 24" to 27" in height, measured from the ground to the ridge between the shoulder blades, dogs being slightly larger than bitches. Dogs usually weigh about 130 lbs, and bitches a little less, although this is a dog which puts on weight easily and needs to be kept on a healthy diet. The muzzle is longer than that of the bulldog, but has a similar wrinkled look, and is usually mostly black. The coat is short haired, and requires relatively little care. The eyes are dark hazel, ears have a v shape and are also usually black or darkly colored. The tail is tapered and high set, and the back should be straight between shoulder blades and tail.
This is a devoted, good-natured dog, but needs consistent firm training, as it has a tendency to assert its own will and can become uncontrollable if allowed to run wild.

Description - Today the bullmastiff is often used as a guard dog, has a place in police and army work, and is considered a good family pet when properly brought up, although its rather competitive and independent nature can lead to problems when small children are in the house.

Ideal Owners: Because of his size and intelligence, the bullmastiff is not for everyone. Requires a strong owner and someone who is willing to enforce rules of proper behavior.

Coat Color: Fawn, Red-Brindle, Red, Black-Brindle

Life Expectancy: 10-12 years
