Chesapeake Bay Retriever
History - An avid water dog, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever’s history dates back to the early 1800’s. Cargo from a shipwreck was retrieved and in one of the crates there were two puppies believed to be Newfoundland pups. These pups were given over to the rescuers and as they grew they showed an unusual affinity for water and for retrieving items from the water. Soon, they were loaned out for breeding purposes to other retriever-type dogs: the Irish Water Spaniel, Newfoundland, Water Spaniel, LowChen and Bloodhound. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever shows a tenacious spirit, and the ability to remember where a duck has fallen. Tirelessly, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever will dive into icy waters always returning with a duck in its jaws. In 1885 the AKC formally recognized the uniqueness of this dog admitting the Chesapeake Bay Retriever into the Sporting Group. Since the Chesapeake Bay Retriever was developed for one purpose (to help duck hunters) he is a hardy breed. He has the ability to push through ice breaking it while he swims. He can brace himself against a tide and is an exceptional swimmer, never letting go of his prize. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a tougher breed than the Labrador Retriever, with a sharper personality. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is also used in water rescue, with his powerful legs and webbed feet he is capable of staying afloat for long periods of time without tiring. His coat is waterproof and carries an oily sheen to help protect him from harsh elements. Appearance - The Chesapeake Bay Retriever should look strong a muscular in appearance. Chest is strong deep and broad. Coat is thich and reasonably short. Dead grass (straw to bracken), sedge (red gold), or any shade of brown. White spots on chest, toes and belly permissible. Small ears and Medium length tail with slight feathering. Description - Although a hardy dog, he is happiest being inside with his family. Even though he excels in the water, on land, his activity level is quite low, and a daily swim is enough to satisfy him. He is affectionate, fun-loving, and highly intelligent with a strong watchdog ability. He can tolerate cold much better than heat. He is the color of a wooded forest blending in well with hunters at duck blinds. Color - Any shades of brown Life Expectancy - 12-13 years Chesapeake Bay Retriever ReviewsNo rating available.
