The Chinese Crested Dog is a smallish breed of dog known for its unusual appearance. It has been known in China since the 13th century. They have also been known in Europe as shown in artwork from the 15th centuries.

They Chinese Crested comes in two varieties: Hairless and coated version called the Powderpuff. Hairless are the more famous variety of Chinese crested, known for their lack of a fur coat. Instead, they have a soft, human-like skin which is unusual to the touch, but they do have tufts of fur on their paws and tail.

The Powderpuffs are less unusual-looking, and they share the crest and build of the Hairless. It is said that this is nature’s way of keeping the newborn Hairless puppies warm.

Both versions of the Chinese Crested are shown together in the show ring and are judge by the same standards. They both have a head of long, wavy hair on their heads, which is known as a crest. Fur on the muzzle, known as a beard, is not uncommon.

The Chinese Cresteds are affectionate, happy dogs, but some develop neurotic behaviour, and the Hairless dogs can develop a nasty case of acne therefore regular bathing is required. Maintenance of the skin is similar to maintaining human skin--moisturising cream can keep the skin from becoming too dry. In fair skinned Chinese Crested, the skin is required will need to be protected by the sun with sun screen when necessary to prevent sunburn

Ideal owners: The Chinese Crested can live anywhere from a flat to a farm as long as you give it the time they deserve. They enjoy the company of people whether from single owners, families or the elderly. As long as you provide them with love an attention the Chinese Crested will remain happy.
