History – The Doberman or Doberman Pinscher originated in the 19th century in Germany. The Doberman was the work of German, Herr Louis Dobermann who was the town’s dog catcher, night watchmen and rates collector. Herr Dobermann wanted a fearless watch dog to help him with his duties and so went on to develop the Doberman Pinscher. It is believe that the Doberman was developed by crossing the Great Dane, Old German Shepherd, Weimaraner, Manchester Terrier, Greyhound and other breds have also been mentioned.

The Dobermann was known as the “Devil Dog” by the American Marines and is their mascot. It earned the name during World War II in the Pacific, where it used to go ashore with the marines and flush out the enemy. The breed spread throughout Eastern Europe making its way to the UK after WWII.

Appearance – The Doberman is a medium sized dog, muscular and elegant with well set body. They should have the look of compact and tough and is capable of reaching great speeds.

The Doberman Pinscher is usually seem with cropped ears and docked tail. In some countries, docking and cropping are now illegal, but in some breed shows, particularly in the United States, Dobermanns are allowed to compete only if they have the traditional look.

Description – The Doberman Pinscher makes a loyal and trustworthy companion. They highly intelligent and can be easily trained to protective and tough towards strangers whilst remaining a playmate for the family. Dobermans should not be nervous or aggressive although they can be quite wary to those it does not know.

Ideal Owners: The Doberman Pincher is an energetic, elegant, fearless, loyal, and obedient dog who will make a devoted companion when properly trained. If you do not have the time to properly train your Dobermann then you should consider a different breed as an untrained Doberman pincher can be dangerous, aggressive and boisterous.

My family and I have two dobermans, 20 mnths and 10 mnths old . Our children are 13 and 11 and the dobes are perfect companions with the children. Although a little domanant at times, if the dobes learn their place in the family house they are a wonderful and exciting member of the family.

They are also born naturally to protect their zone and family . But also can be very social if introduced correctly. Thumbs up to a wonderful breed.

I have owned Dobermans (among other breeds of dogs, too) for the past 25 years. Currently, I have a 2 yr old spayed female dobe(rescue) and a 3 yr old female that I have had since she was 7 wks old. They are my best friends. I love training them to do new things. Sasha, the younger dobe, is a little hard-headed at times, but a very sweet and loving girl. Darmok, my 3 yr old, is absolutely the most intelligent dog I've ever had. She will bring me the phone, my keys, even the TV remote if I ask her to (and if there's a food reward :)

We also have a very old toy fox terrier, an epileptic Pom (rescue) and a 3 month old rat terrier puppy, and the Dobes get along with everyone. They especially like to play with the rattie, because she is so full of energy.

Little Joe "Jose Chico"

Jose Chico was rescued Dobermann from a bad situation and lived with me for 2 1/2 years. Sadly, I had to put him down yesterday 7/10/05 and it broke not only my heart, but the heart of many others who had come to know him. He was so smart, quiet and sweet...he would lean into you when you gave him attention. Due to greedy breaders, he had bad hips that finally gave out and he could no longer get up. We never knew how old he was, but the vet thought no more than 4 or 5. Never have I known such a sweet and devoted dog. My message to the greedy, unethical breaders is: I hope you get what's coming to you.

It was 3:30 in the morning, I heard barking and growling. As I walk to the living room I see this person in this mask on the ground and on top of him was my Doberman, biting and fighting him. I called 911 and from that day on I was never afaird of my dog dying because if he can take down a 327 pound then I know that he can take on any thing

My buddy is my baby and my Dobie. He's highly intelligent and easy to train. He rings a bell on the side door to go out and stands there patiently while I come to him. He picks up tricks easily for treats. He protects the culdesac by barking when someone comes home or if a strange car drives through.

My neighbor's children love playing with him because he is extra gentle and loving with even the 2 year olds. It's a shame they have such a bad reputation. A good breeder will select couples for gentleness as mine did. I wouldn't give up my friend for all the money in the world. Now, if we could just work on that 7:00 bladder he's got.

History

I have always owned dobermans and they are wonderful dogs. They are not, however, the mascot of the U.S. Marines. The term Devil Dog was given to the Marines by German observers due to the relentless and agressive fighting tactics of the Marines in Belleu Wood.

As a former Marine myself I vouch for the authenticity of this history. The actual mascot is a British Bulldog whom we named continuously name Chesty, (after Col. Chesty Puller.) The Doberman was indeed a vital part of the island hopping campaign against the Japenese in the Pacific as was the German Shepherd and undoubtedly saved hundreds of lives due to there large hearts and obedience.

The doberman is the best dog I have owned. Make sure to locate a good breeder. Spend the extra dollars on getting a well bred Dobe and you will never want another breed.

My dog

My family was recently heartbroken when our Doberman "Alice" passed away. She was the most wonderful dog. She was a loyal companion and helped me feel safe as I took her for walks or was home by myself with the children. She was excellent with our two small children and always gentle. Alice was affecionate and definately had a personality all of her own. We had so much fun walking, playing, riding, climbing, eatting, sleeping, etc... together. I am sure there are many other great dogs out there, but no one could ever replace her in my heart.

I highly recommend the Doberman Pinscher as a pet as long as you have time for them and patience to discipline and socialize them appropriately. We found that due to her size it was more difficult to have her indoors when our children were born and we moved to a smaller house. One plus- with the smaller house was that we got 40 acres versus a small town lot. It was so nice for Alice to be able to run around and be as noisy as she wanted. She loved chasing squirrels, although never did catch one. Neighbors in town weren't too appreciative of her barking.

I got 6 week old Myla on Sep 11th of 2004. She is now 7 months old. She is the best dog!! Very smart and very eager to please. The only down side is we live in town and she barks at anything that moves. The dobermann breed is very easy to take care of. They are very additive own at your own risk!!!

I have only had my Dobe for 6 months now....he is still a pup but he is the absolute smartest dog I have ever owned. He is excelling in obedience and will be beginning his advanced obedience class on Monday 2/14. he is very protective but is also VERY lovable to those I approve of.

It is my goal to make him a therapy dog, and when he is old enough we will be certified to go into hospitals for visits. I couldn't have asked for a better companion.

I have been around Dobermans for most my life and I wouldn;t own and other dog. I have a 16 month female doberman and she is the best friend a person could have. She protects me when she has to but can be like a little child as well. They are a good dog to have around children or adults and are very smart.

My parents and I have had dobermans for forty years or more, I have had two males both were my best friend and companion they are a very protective breed and very loyal to the owner.

The Dobermann is a breed that must be trained well and given lots of exercise and love like one of the family. My saying is you only get out what you put in there are no bad dogs just bad owners!

I owned dobermans and have always found them to be highly intelligent, sometimes to smart. They will learn anything that you take the time to teach them.

I have two dombermans who seem to work together. An intruder was in my house trapped by the dobies one in front the other in back with no way for the man to leave. Thank you. They seem to sense when you don't like someone.

I had a little trouble with my homeowners insurance because of the dangerous breed they have been tagged unfairly with, but I still wouldn't have any other breed. They are my best friends and would die to protect me - without being trained to do so. They would out of love.

The dobe has been used as a guard dog and a watchdog in WW1, WW2 and other wars. It is a fearless dog but a great family dog. loves and protects those it bonds with. It will give its life to protect its family.

The Dobermann is an awsome dog and very smart, alert, and will always let you know if something is wrong. It has a better nose than a bloodhound and better hearing than most other dogs. It is a clean dog which makes it a great indoor dog.

Having owned a dobermann for about 2 years, it was a GREAT companion. Definately a great watchdog as she would bark at people near the house, but she was trained to not bark all the while. They make great dogs to train and also great companions if you like excerice. A good run at the park and jogging kept her fit and happy!

Excellent guard

Rating: TBA (11vote/s)

If ever you need a dog to guard something, the doberman is the breed. In fact the physical look is usually enough to scare of any person dumb enough to go near its house or territory. Grooming is minimal, not the best dogs to leave a kid alone with
