Dogo Argentino
History – In the 1920’s in Argentina, two brothers, who had grown up under the shadow of the fierce and loyal Fighting Dog of Cordoba, set out to create a breed that would have more of a pack tendency, rather than willing to fight anything on four legs. They wanted a loyal and stalwart companion to guard estates, livestock and lives. In order to achieve this goal, the two brothers Antonio and Austin Nores Martinez took several other breed characteristics and blended them all eventually, by selective breeding: the Pointer, known for his stamina and ability to hunt, the Boxer, recognized for this agility and tenacity, the Great Dane, renowned for its size and leanness. More dog breeds were added to the line: The Bull Terrier acknowledged for his strength in the bull ring. The Bull Dog perceived for this stoutness and fierceness when facing bull or bear. The Irish Wolfhound, built for speed and endurance, the Dogue de Bordeaux in an effort to develop a dog with a strong grip. They also used the Great Pyrenees to gain the long white coat and protective nature, and finally, the Spanish Mastiff to give the dog its full measure of power. Appearance – The Dogo Argentino is well-muscled, but graceful. He is capable of great bursts of amazing speed. He is steady and protective for his 8:45 owners. Because of his pure white skin, he is susceptible to skin disorders, including some cancers. His coat is thick, his chest is firm and his jaw is stout. He is highly intelligent, willing to learn and eager to please. He has great endurance and is fiercely loyal, cautious of strangers. If you consider the beginning, what an impressive achievement in the 1920’s; selective line breeding combined with genetics, with all efforts fully documented for history’s sake. Description - The Dogo Argentino are tempermental and can be boisterous dogs. This white mastiff requires early socialization with other animals and need early obedience training.
