English Setter
History - This is one of the traditional English hunting dogs, and has been a distinct breed from the 14th century. It was bred from the spaniel to help catch game, 'setting' or pointing at birds which had been brought down by netting, or later on, by having been shot. During the 19th century the breed was further refined and became the gentle, well mannered dog it is today. Appearance - The English Setter appears in three colors- white flecked with brown, or orange belton, white flecked with black, or blue belton, or a combination of the two, called tri color. The coat is long and silky, and needs a lot of care. If it is not brushed every day it can become matted and dirty, and it will need to be trimmed regularly. The dog also really needs a bath once every month or two to look its best. This is a fairly large dog, usually reaching 23" to 27" at the shoulder blade, the male dog usually being slightly larger and much more heavily built than the bitch. The dog can be 80 pounds, whereas the bitch is usually around 45- 55 pounds. The breed is divided into sub divisions of 'field' and 'show', where the field dog is a little smaller and more active. The muzzle is fairly long and squarish, and ears are pendant and soft haired. The tail is fairly long and straight, and is heavily feathered, as are the legs and stomach. Eyes are large and hazel colored. Description - Being a hunting dog, this breed needs to exercise regularly, and will benefit from a run every day, or at least a good walk. The English Setter is usually a wonderful family pet, and is excellent with small children because it is a gentle and patient dog. It enjoys living with people, and usually gets on well when kept in an apartment, as long as it gets enough exercise. As a watchdog it may not be really assertive enough, and this is not a dog which can live happily in a kennel. Ideal Owners: The English Setter is a great dog for a young family. They do require regular exercise and quality time with the family. A well-fenced backyard is essential.
