History: A member of the Sporting Group, English Springer Spaniels were bred to help with hunters in flushing out game. Prior to shotguns, game was routinely flushed into large nets. The English Springer Spaniel was a coveted game dog because of his endurance and energy.

In 1902 the breed was recognized by the English Kennel Club. The English Springer Spaniel remains a popular breed today for hunting, show, and as a companion animal.

Appearance: He has a longer body than most dogs his size. The legs are long, giving him the ability to cover a lot of ground during a hunt. There is a majestic stance to this dog. His coat is wavy, medium hair.

The ears sport long curly hair as well, that protect the sides of the face when the dog’s head is down on a scent. His expression is one of intelligence and alertness, with bright eyes and a slightly narrow head. When first born, the English Springer Spaniel is white then later will come in a variety of different colors, usually two or three colors, black and white, brown or white, with shades of tan. The English Springer Spaniel is the largest of the spaniel dogs.

Description: Because this dog was bred for hunting, he needs to be active in the daytime. Long walks or workouts on a daily basis are a must to keep this dog in prime shape. The English Springer Spaniel is easily trained, and willing to learn. Playful and affectionate, he makes the ultimate family companion for small children. Accepting of pets, perhaps the only drawback to the English Springer Spaniel is his friendliness to strangers.

The coat requires daily care and brushing, to keep mats out of the hairs and if the dog gets in the field he can be a cockle-burr magnet. Also the long hairs on the feet capture debris, so the pads of the feet need to be checked after an outing.

Ideal Owners: Less snappy than the Cocker Spaniel, the English Springer Spaniel is a great addition to the family. They require frequent exercise and attention from family members. They also love swimming

Springer Spaniels are wonderful dogs. No matter what the age, they are active but very affectionate. A Springer pup is great fun to have around. Watching them jump about and play is great fun but it can also be very demanding and tiring. Walking Poppy, my 4 month springer, is great joy. She stays close to me and is very obiedient but even after taking her out for an hour throwing a ball and making her run, she is still ready to spring when she gets home.

They just don't seem to tire.
