Harriers are a 900+ year old scenthound breed used to hunt English Hare in packs. They MUST get along with other dogs and people. In foot hunting, the dogs have been asked to hunt with unfamiliar people and hounds in groups ... aggression to either is not tolerated.

Harriers are gentle by nature and are excellent companion dogs for families with young children. However, they do not make good watch dogs. They also require a thoroughly-fenced yard, as the instinct to follow their nose can get the best of them and lead them to wander off.

Harriers do require moderate exercise but they are very easy to groom, a wash-and-go breed; brushing is only required ocassionally.

As with most scenthound breeds, feeding is not a problem ... they will eat most anything!

Biggest health concerns with harriers: hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, PRA/Cataracts, and ocassionally epilepsy.
