History - The Vizsla, pronounced Vizh-la (zh as in vision), is a dog breed originating in Hungary. Vizslas are known as excellent game bird hunting dogs, and also have a level personality making them suited for families.

There are two prevailing theories pertaining to the Vizsla's history. The first, and most prevalent theory traces the Vizsla back to very early times in Hungarian history. Ancestors of todays's Vizsla were the hunting dogs used by the Magyar tribes living in the Carpathian Basin in the Eighth Century. Primitive stone etchings seem to validate this theory.

The other theory holds that the Vizsla is a product of the past century, having been the product of Weimaraners and other pointer breeds.

Appearance - The Hungarian Vizslas looks strikingly similar to that of the Rhodesian Ridgeback. They also physically likened to their German cousin, the Weimaraner.

Vizslas are often mistaken for ridgeless Rhodesian Ridgebacks, and physically likened to Weimaraners, their German cousins. The wire-haired version is popular in countries like Canada where the Wire-haired Hungarian Vizslas could been seen working as gundogs.

I'm on my second vizsla--he is eleven years old and we are preparing to compete in agility! He is the fastest dog in our class. These dogs can be great but they need a committed, physically active, "dog person" owner. On the plus side, they are beautiful, low-maintenance in the grooming dept., and usually healthy and long-lived. However, they are very, very, very energetic and athletic, especially when young. If they don't get enough hard exercise they will get antsy and destructive. If they aren't obedience trained, they will wreak havoc. They need to live in the house, to be in the room with you, and they prefer to be as close to you as physically as possible (preferably on your lap). They are eager to please and very intelligent, but because they are hunting dogs, bred to find game for you, they tend to focus on the environment rather than on their handler, as herding dogs do.

The Hungarian Vizsla are natural retrievers, too, and when they are young want to carry everything around in their mouths, including your children. They are sensitive dogs who pick up on your every mood, but many tend to be on the nuerotic/overreactive/highstrung side. They are quite good watch dogs, though not attack dogs. They tend to be friendly with other dogs and with people, though their attentions can be a little overwhelming.

My advice: find a good, experienced breeder and pick the calmest puppy in the litter.

The vizsla is one of a kind, it does not think it is a dog and it wants to be loved and treated like a human
