Jack Russell Terrier
History - This strong willed, independent little dog was developed in the 19th century by an English parson called Jack Russell. He wanted a dog which would be even better at hunting small prey than the Fox Terrier, and bred for personality rather than bodily characteristics. The result was a dog which not only enjoys burrowing after prey, but will also readily climb and jump, and has an incredible amount of energy, combined with a rather pugilistic attitude towards other dogs and small animals. Appearance - The Jack Russell is typically slightly smaller than its cousins, and stands 10'' to 15'' high at the shoulder blade, with a narrow chest and strong, muscular hind quarters. This is because it has remained a true working dog, which must be small and strong enough to get into a fox hole. The muzzle is quite long and thin, with a powerful jaw, ears are small and v shaped, dropping forwards, and the eyes are small and dark colored. The tail is high set, and cropped to about four inches long. All Jack Russells should have a lot of white in their coat, at least 51%, with tan, brown or black markings. The coat can be smooth, rough or broken ( a mixture of smooth and rough) but not woolly. Rough or broken coats need to be plucked about twice a year to keep the dog looking at its best. Description - The Jack Russell can be a handful, and may not be the ideal pet for everyone. Although its antics can be charming and very amusing, it does have an awful lot of energy, and often spends it digging up the garden, chasing any other animal, big or small, and barking at anything and everything. This dog is at its best in a large open area, and gets on well with horses and other large animals, which can fend for themselves. It is not easy to train a Jack Russell, and training should be started early and continued consistently. Jack Russells often suffer from eye disorders in old age. Ideal Owner: Ideal for families with children over 3-5 years of age. The Jack Russell Terriers is a great companion and makes great guard dogs. Remember that the JRT are packed full of energy and so it is a requirement for this breed that owners give them plenty of exercise.
