Jack Russell Terrier

Jack Russell Terrier: BREED BOX

Country:

Great Britain

Size:

12-18lb(5-8kg), 11-15in(28-38cm)

Temperament:

Friendly, playful, bold, fearless

Grooming:

Little

Recognition:

FCI, AKC, ANKC, KC(UK), UKC

History - This strong willed, independent little dog was developed in the 19th century by an English parson called Jack Russell. He wanted a dog which would be even better at hunting small prey than the Fox Terrier, and bred for personality rather than bodily characteristics. The result was a dog which not only enjoys burrowing after prey, but will also readily climb and jump, and has an incredible amount of energy, combined with a rather pugilistic attitude towards other dogs and small animals.

Appearance - The Jack Russell is typically slightly smaller than its cousins, and stands 10'' to 15'' high at the shoulder blade, with a narrow chest and strong, muscular hind quarters. This is because it has remained a true working dog, which must be small and strong enough to get into a fox hole. The muzzle is quite long and thin, with a powerful jaw, ears are small and v shaped, dropping forwards, and the eyes are small and dark colored. The tail is high set, and cropped to about four inches long. All Jack Russells should have a lot of white in their coat, at least 51%, with tan, brown or black markings. The coat can be smooth, rough or broken ( a mixture of smooth and rough) but not woolly. Rough or broken coats need to be plucked about twice a year to keep the dog looking at its best.

Description - The Jack Russell can be a handful, and may not be the ideal pet for everyone. Although its antics can be charming and very amusing, it does have an awful lot of energy, and often spends it digging up the garden, chasing any other animal, big or small, and barking at anything and everything. This dog is at its best in a large open area, and gets on well with horses and other large animals, which can fend for themselves. It is not easy to train a Jack Russell, and training should be started early and continued consistently. Jack Russells often suffer from eye disorders in old age.

Ideal Owner: Ideal for families with children over 3-5 years of age. The Jack Russell Terriers is a great companion and makes great guard dogs. Remember that the JRT are packed full of energy and so it is a requirement for this breed that owners give them plenty of exercise.

Coat Color: White/Brown, White/Black, Tricolor

Life Expectancy: 13-14 years

Abby and Lulu

Best Dogs in the world

I have always had cats until my husband introduced me to the Jack Russell terrier. Talk about a different lifestyle. We now have two Jacks and adore them as much as they adore us. They are easy to train and with plenty of excersie and toys to stimulate them, they are very well behaved. Once they have their minds made up to do something they never forget. If any two dogs could be so different in personality and yet the same breed and from the same breeder it"s these two. Abby gentle and sweet comes at your call. Lulu super high energy has to be the first at everything, still doesn"t know her name when you say "come". (of course knows her name if there is a treat involved) lol. My husband warned me not to over indulge them as they have a tenency to gain wait and I keep in under check.

On the weekends when were home and I know I will be giving them treats for training I cut their morning and evening meals. Abby is 3yrs old and Lulu 2yrs old this March and they are just under 14lbs and are very fit. Both have long hair but they don"t shed much and we keep them in puppy cuts. I wish we could post pictures. Love love love em...

My JRT :Ches

My Jack Russell Terrier is an excellent companion. Ches is her name and food is her gain! She is very much excited about food and is highly trainable for it. So far, I"ve trianed her to sit, stand, come, stay, bark, roll over and dance. I"ve just recently taught her to stand and bark at the same time. She will bark, stand, sit and stay with different hand signals (with no voice command). Ches is now a year and a half old and loves, loves, loves to eat eat eat!

She recently went to the vet and is 3 pounds overweight....Time to cut back!! JRT's will do anything they can to score an extra snack. Be careful, don"t fall into the trap of their innocent hungry stare and whinning! Ches is excellent with children (old and young) and does very well with other dogs. Introducing your dog to various unfamillular situations (whether other dogs, humans, or strange sounds ) at a young age on a constant weekly/daily basis your Jack Russell Terrier will develop an even better personality.

Have Fun!

Toby and Shelby

I have two Jack Russells, Toby and Shelby. Toby is seven months and Shelby is 3 months. They are a handful but I couldn't live without them. They are the most energetic and lovable animals in the world. I don't know how such a small bundle of fur can hold that much personality and spunk. I spend all day either running around the yard while they chase the sprinkler or cuddled up with them on the couch watching a movie.

Until I decide I am ready for the two legged kind, they are my "babies". They go everywhere with my husband and me. Even at their young age they have traveled all over New York state with us and even made trips to Maryland. They are great in the car and love to see and explore new territories.

Toby is a great protector who will defend Shelby and me anyday. Be warned though, he just doesn't like some people. Shelby on the other hand loves everyone. She will attact you with kisses as will Toby after a thorough investigation. Next to my husband, they are the loves of my life.

Lennie The Super Dog

Lennie is a very characteristic dog. He is very much apart of the family and very affectionate. He is an indoor dog and sleeps alot, but he loves going for walkies. Lennie only has one trick (standing on his hind legs) and shows it off when he wants a pat or food.

My baby Simba is a Parson Russell Terrier X. He"s got hair everywhere in the house, however, his hair does not grow really long. Simba needs a lot of exercise. As Jack Russel Terriers are known to love digging, Simba"s an indoor, so he dig my carpet instead!! He can go berserk running around the house up the stairs from back to front, so he needs a lot of exercise. Simba"s a generally good watchdog. When he"s sleeping, he cannot be bothered barking, so he does his half bark instead (still sleeping and bark a little).
