History - The Labrador Retriever originated in Newfoundland, off the coast of Canada. Labrador Retrievers were originally known as St Johns Dogs or the Lesser New Foundland. Labradors then were developed to aid fishermen retrieve cork floats of fishing nets and swimming them ashore, so that the fisherman can pull in the net full of fish.

Labrador Retrievers were then later taken to north of England where they were used as gun dogs and retrievers.

Appearance – The Labrador Retriever has a double coat: a soft, downy undercoat that helps them keep dry when retrieving game in water. They have a distinctive tail, often described as “Otter” tail that is very thick towards the base and tapers towards a narrow point.

Description – The Labrador Retriever is known for its intelligence, warmth and affection towards its family. They are easy to obedience train and thus are excellent in the house. Labradors are said to be big eaters so it is recommended that you feed them with a well balanced diet or else obesity can occur.

Because of their gentle temperament Labradors are often used as guide dogs for the blind, drug sniffing for the police, and for search and rescue work.

Ideal Owners: Labrador Retrievers are full of energy so daily exercise is a must or else they will get bored and restless and may start barking. For this reason they are perfectly suited to families.

My Chocolate Lab, Candy, recently passed away after a short illness, at nine years old, due to liver failure. My wife, three sons and I miss her joy and love very much. She had this tremendous Lab smile that only Lab owners have experienced. As a companion, she was always ready to go for a walk or lay down and read a book, she was happy just being with us. She loved to go where ever we went and was very disappointed if she had to stay home. She especially loved snow, making "doggy angels" all over the yard and any where else she could roll in fresh snow (we live in Canada, so we get lots of snow). Candy is greatly missed and there is great debate as to whether we should get another dog now or wait some time or never get one as the loss of our "fourth and best behaved child" is still very fresh. Whatever we decide, we know that Chocolate Labs are the best family friend you can have. This breed of dog is probably the best all round family pet, and companion there is. I have shared my life with several wonderful breeds of dog, including a Norwegian Elkhound, Dashound and Beagle and have loved them all, but the easiest to live with has been our Chocolate Lab, Candy.

I have a black labrador retriever that i do agility with and she is just great, she can do like more than fifty commands. I got her as my fifth dog when i was twelve years old, it was hard on me, i loved dogs since the day i was born and there i was only twelve and going through more than one dog every three years, she is going to be having her fourth birthday August 5, 2005 and i just can"t wait.

Getting this dog actually pulled me out of a very dangerous depresion. I was ready to throw myself against the wall until i blacked out. I am 100% better though, and i am involved in agility with my lab, but she is kind of on vacation, i am showing my beagle in agility, and he has already finished his novice JWW tite. My lab has even become the sereget mother to my kittens since their mother got hit by a car and broke her leg.

She had to stay in a crate isolated from all the other animals for EIGHT weeks, and the kittens were only like 5-6 weeks old, lucky i had my loveable lab. Labs are just great all together, the whole breed is so outgoing and gentle. I want to send a shout out to my dearly missed chocolate lab Lady. and any other people who got the chance to adopt or foster her brothers and sisters from the vermont case. She was the greatest dog you ever could have asked for, in some cases, she even acted better than my black lab. Living on route 30 takes its tolls. : (

My Labby Roxy

We have a beautiful Chocolate Labrador Retreiver. She is very loving and full of energy! She licks my face every morning as soon as my alarm goes off just to make sure I am up. She is very smart and knows exactly what she is NOT supposed to do even if she decides to do it anyway. Roxy was very easy to train. I taught her to sit in 24 hrs when she was 10 weeks old.

The only issues (I would never call them problems) are she sheds so much. I have found hair on clean dishes straight out of the dishwasher! We can't brush her very well because she attacks the evil brush. When we bought her we thought she would at least alert us if someone was at the door... NO WAY, she would lick an intruder to death.

However, she is very get up and go. We can take her nearly anywhere and everyone loves her because she so freely gives out her love and her big wet kisses.

This is our wonderful black labrador Retriever. He is the most perfect dog we have ever owned. He comes from an excellent bloodline, has the most friendly and gentle temperament, and has a big beautiful black lab face.

His only flaw is that he has a herniated belly button. Because of this, he was given to us for free because nobody wanted him!
