History - Pronounced (Lerv-chun) Lowchen means Little Lion Dog. A member of the Bichon family the Lowchen also shares its lines with the Havanese, a small dog that originated in the Mediterranean. Three countries have claimed the rights to this breed, so it is unclear really where the Lowchen originated from. Popular with nobility, the breed can be seen in paintings by the Masters.  It faded from view, but made a remarkable comeback during WWII thanks to the dedication of Madame Bennert from Belgium.

The Lowchen gained added exposure when the entered twice into the Guinness book of World Records, listed under the most expensive dog breed in the world, and also the rarest dog breed in the world.

Appearance - The name Little Lion Dog refers to the cut of the breed. Called a lion cut, in the show ring, the legs are shaved down and feathered out around the paws. The tail is curled, and parts of the tail mast are shorn down, leaving a plume fur at the end, similar to a show poodle cut.  The coat is clipped short from the last rib, the hindquarters down to the carpus. Any of the other long hair on the dog is left long and flowing. When Unclipped the dogs have a long coated scruffy look. The coat is long and wavy, especially around the ears.

The Lowchen was recognized as a non-sporting dog by the AKC in 1999.

Description - The Lowchen is a friendly and inquisitive creature. He likes to be mentally stimulated and exercised daily. Bored, he will dig (most dogs dig from stress or boredom). Although playful in nature, he is a lap hog; and no that is not a typo! Lowchens love to be in their owner’s lap. He is a devoted family member and willing to please. He has almost a comical nature about him.  He does better living inside than outside and is good with other pets.

Ideal Owners: Well suited to families. The Lowchen can be kept in virtually any dwelling, small or large, as long as it is exercised regularly.

Color Coat: All colors allowed except chocolate brown. White, black and lemon preferred

Life Expectancy: 13-14 years

Other Names: Little Lion Dog, LÖWCHEN
