History - Contrary to popular belief, a Miniature Pinscher is not a Doberman in miniature. The Miniature Pinscher or Min Pin is actually an older breed than the Doberman Pinscher.  You can find Min Pins depicted in seventeenth century paintings.

It is believed the breed resulted with the crossing of a Dachshund with an Italian Greyhound. Since there are no written records about this breeding, the findings have been derived from comparing other breeds characteristics with the Min Pins; the clear red coloring to the coat, the spunky spirit, and the athleticism and noble stature.

The Min Pin is known as the world’s most energetic breed of dog.

However, the history of this breed does have its share of sadness. Early breeding attempts to make this breed even smaller in stature in the late 1800’s resulted in severely deformed, crippled puppies that had to be immediately killed.  Fortunately ethical breeders stepped in returning the breed back to it original intention; that of a more refined breed of dog that desired to be active.

In 1929 the AKC recognized the breed and placed it in the Toy Group.

Appearance -  The Miniature Pinscher looks like a pint-sized Dobermann, however they are not a midget. The Miniature Pinscher should look well balanced and sturdy. They are compact, short coupled. Min-Pins are smooth-coated and easily groomed. They have large and erected ears. Tails are docked, set high and held erect.

Description - The Miniature Pinscher has a high prey drive and will chase after other small animals. If confronted with other larger dogs, he will not back down, for the Miniature Pinscher is not a coward.  Not friendly to strangers, the watchdog ability is high.

The Miniature Pinscher is not easy to train. Some believe the brain is on so many tracks, distracted by all the scents and sounds, that the dog loses focus easily. Pinned up, the Miniature Pinscher can resort to destructive behavior.

Today this breed is quite popular, but the Miniature Pinscher is not for everyone. Always inquisitive, busy and active, the Min Pin needs to be exercised and mentally challenged daily.

Ideal Owners: Great dog for familes with older children. Suitable for indoor life and is a great watch dog.
