Norwegian Elkhound
The Norwegian Elkhound is the national dog of Norway. They are hunting dogs that originated as early as 5000BC. In their homeland the Norwegian Elkhound is being used for all types of jobs, including pulling sleds, hunting lynx, wolves, moose, bear and guarding the family home. They hunt by scent to locate the quarry and either drive it towards the huntsmen or hold it at bay. The Norwegian Elkhound stands about 19-21 in. high at the shoulder and weighs between 44 and 50 lb. The coat is gray and thick, made up of soft dense, woolly undercoat and coarse straight covering hairs. Ears are set high and should be firm and erect, pointed and very mobile. The Norwegian Elkhound is friendly, intelligent and independent and should not display signs of nervousness.
