Papillon
History - The Papillon, or Butterfly dog, is the modern version of the Toy Spaniel made famous by paintings of French and Spanish nobility in the 16th century. This tiny, delicate lapdog was one of the first non working dogs to be bred, and its origins are shrouded in history. Some say that its ancestors arrived from Mexico after the Conquest, others claim that it was brought to Europe from China. By the 18th century the breed was almost identical to the modern day Papillon, but the final flourish, ears which stand erect and give the breed its name, appeared towards the end of the 19th century and immediately became very popular. Appearance - This is one of the smallest dogs bred today, and most stand between 8" to 11" to the shoulder blade, with a weight about the same as a new born baby, 3 to 9 lbs. The limbs are slender and fine boned, the muzzle is thin and tapered, and the head is slightly rounded. The ears either stand in the butterfly shape, or lie flat in the Phalene type. The coat is long haired and silky, and can be just about any combination of colors, as long as there is a certain amount of white. The legs are feathered and the tail is plumed, giving this dog its typical flowing, opulent appearance. Description - The Papillon is the ultimate lapdog, both in physical characteristics and in temperament. Its coat needs little care, does not shed or become matted easily, and can be quickly brushed to a shine. It is a relaxed, quiet dog which generally likes people and tends not to bark much. It needs little exercise and is happy living in an apartment or small house, not just a palace! Ideal Owners: Great for elderly or for families with limited space. The Papillion loves companionship and will give its owner lifelong loyalty in return. Other Names: Continental Toy Spaniel Coat Color: Any color with majority white Life Expectancy: 13-14 years Papillon Reviews
