Pekingese
History - This dog has probably the longest and most interesting history of all dogs. More than 4000 years ago, the Chinese emperors kept Pekingese as companions, the dog was considered to bring good luck and was loved and honored by all. Legend says that the breed originated when a lion fell in love with a marmoset, and asked an animal god to make him as small as his love! Wherever it started, over thousands of years the breed was perfected and bred in many different colors. The all white Pekingese was considered to be very special, and was thought to be the reincarnation of a saint. In the 19th century, because of the occupation of Peking by western soldiers, the breed became known in the west, and was bred from a small stock which was brought to England. Later the breed died out in China after the revolution, and now exists mostly in western countries. Appearance - The Pekingese is a very small dog, but it is no lightweight. With a height usually between 6" to 9", it can weigh up to 14 lbs. Its muzzle is very short and flat, and has a prominent wrinkle, eyes often protrude slightly and ears are drooping and long haired. This is a heavy boned, thick set dog with a confident, lion like stance and a slightly rolling walk. The coat, which is long and double layered, needs careful grooming to avoid matting, and is shed twice a year. Discription - This can be a good pet, especially for people with limited space. The Pekingese often hates exercise, although some will agree to a daily walk, and it has a tendency to gain weight. Although it usually enjoys barking at strangers, it is not an aggressive dog, and rarely bites, contrary to popular belief. Pekingese are sometimes used as guard dogs because of their reliable barking alert. These dogs often have breathing problems and snore because of their flat muzzles.
