Portuguese Water Dog
History - These water-loving dogs were used long ago in the fifth century to herd fish into waiting fishermen’s nets, retrieve anything that fell off a boat, and used as a ship to shore messenger. Believed to be the precursor of such breeds as the Newfoundland and the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, the Portuguese Water Dog lives up to its name. Its ancestors of long ago were herding dogs in Asia and brought over to Portugal sometime in the fifth century. Some historians believe the dogs were not purposely brought to Portugal, but were instead the hardy survivors of ship wrecks and pirates. Long renowned for their capabilities in the water, the Portuguese Water Dogs were prevalent in the fishing industries. Almost vanishing in the twentieth century but saved from true extinction by a man who admired the breed; Dr. Vasco Besuade, a shipping magistrate. He kept the breed alive and the Portugese Water Dog began appearing in show rings. They vanished again in the 1950’s until the Portuguese Water Dog made an appearance in America and in 1984 was recognized by the AKC. Appearance - Possessing the longer curled hair of the poodle, with a slight shine to the coat, the long hair insulates the dog from the cold and allows the dog to cut cleanly through the water. The Portuguese Water Dog comes in black or brown, with or without without markings on the chest, the head and the legs. His feet are flat and not rounded, and the webbing around his paws is covered with hair for protection. When showing, the coat covers the shoulders, front legs and head, while the back legs, tail and muzzle are closely trimmed similar to that of the Poodle - the lion clip. Description - He is active, and loves to play but is willing to work. Needs daily vigorous exercise and though tolerant of cold weather, enjoys being in the nucleus of the family rather than banned outside. The Portuguese Water Dog is good with children and other pets, cautious of strangers and just a fun dog to have around, especially if the family enjoys water activities. Ideal owner: This is a dog for people who have sufficient time and dedication to a regular grooming and exercise routine, as neglecting either will have consequences for the dog's wellbeing.
