Recognition:

A Pudelpointer is a versatile hunting dog breed from Germany. They are a pointing breed that came from a cross between poodles and various pointers.

In the 1800s, a German breeder, Baron von Zedlitz, worked on producing his ideal tracking, pointing, and retrieving gun dog, suitable for work on both land and water. From seven specific Poodles and nearly 100 different Pointers, he developed the Pudelpointer.

Although it is an excellent breed with no major faults, it has never become a popular or well-known breed. In Germany, its performance standards are its most important traits and each dog must pass a test of its field skills to be registered as a Pudelpointer.

The breed weighs between 44 and 66 pounds (20-30 kg), stands 21 to 26 inches (53-66 cm) at the shoulder, and comes in liver, chestnut, and black coats.

Happiness is a Pudelpointer

My Pudelpointer was a Humane Society Special. I had no idea it was a real breed. I thought somebody was just trying to be funny and had misspelled "puddle pointer". I got mine because he looked like a very small version of my old Irish Wolfhound.

A Pudelpointer breeder stopped me on the street one day to ask about my puppy. He was the one who told me I hadn"t adopted a mutt. The Pudelpointer is extremely smart and very busy. I learned early on that I needed to provide him plenty of toys and excersise. A structured obedience class helped a lot. My dog would rather guard his food than eat it and is not terribly interested in treats. Hugs and pats worked better in his training. He started to calm down a bit at 5 years. Scooter is now 11 years old, in terrific physical shape, and still "busy". He seems to be getting more sensitive and fearful of noises as he ages, though, and he"s always been gun-shy.

He uses his pointing skills to show me songbirds and airplanes. Running for the shear pleasure of it seems to be his favorite thing. He"s very tolerant of the family cats and gets along with most dogs. His initial reaction to strangers is to bark, but then he wants to make friends right away. If I had to sum up the Pudelpointer in one word, it would be "delighted", because he"s so happy all the time.

We have two 1 year old Pudelpointers. They are littermates however they posess completly different personalities. They are excellent house dogs and awesome hunters/trackers. They love to play and be around people. They are extremely clever and can learn new things with amazing ease. We have never owned dogs before and we are very pleased with our decision to have Pudelpointers.

Pudelpointer is fantastic

We got this dog as a fluke. We were looking for another Standard Poodle because of allergies, and the Pudelpointer dog popped up. She does shed, but not to the point that we're bothered.

It's slow as shedding goes. After having terriers and the Standard Poodle we have now, all of which we enjoyed -- and having been around a lot of golden retrievers and labs and other popular breeds, we feel this breed tops them all.

We know she came from strong hunting line, and we find her doing things like pointing, catching vermin and standing over it until we come and release her (then she has no interest in it), etc. But, the best thing about her is her patience with the older dog, her love of play, how cuddly she is, etc.

A fantastic dog with our children, and a VERY fast learner. Ours hates water, though. The Pudelpointer are expensive, but worth the price if youcan findone. Also, is a very big people magnet. People are intrigued with her and want to know what kind of dog she is.
