History - The history of the Rottweiler is not well documented, but it seems to have evolved from early herding dogs used by the Romans, and probably arrived in Germany with them. Named for the town of Rottweil, the dog was called 'the butchers dog' because it brought cattle to market in the 18th century, but with changes in farming techniques, and because of its tendency to attack strangers, it lost popularity. At the start of the 20th century it began to be used as a police dog, and gradually became accepted as a fierce and capable watchdog.

Appearance - The Rottweiler is a very powerful, musclebound dog with a jaw which can exert great pressure. The dog is substantially heavier and larger than the bitch, standing 24" to 27"  and weighing up to 135lbs, compared to 22" to 25" and 115lbs for the bitch. The muzzle is of medium length, square set and heavily muscled, ears are small and held to the side, widening the already massive head. The front quarters are wider and heavier than the hindquarters, and the back slopes gradually towards the tail, which is high set. The tail is naturally thin and whip-like, but is traditionally docked close to the body to prevent an attacker from using it to control the dog. The coat is short and quite coarse, with a partial undercoat which varies with climate, but needs little grooming. The Rottweiler is always black with typical brown markings on the lower legs and face.

Description - Rottweilers make excellent guard dogs and can be relied upon to deter most intruders. With careful training and thorough socialization they sometimes make good pets, although their strong herding instinct means that they should not be left with small children. They need daily exercise and should really have a good run, but they can be aggressive towards other dogs and need careful supervision.

Ideal Owners: The Rottweiler requires a strong handler as the breed requires firm guidance and training. The Rottweiler is a power dog and although they tolerate children, children need to be taught to treat the dog fairly.

Coat Color: Black with brown markings

Life Expectancy: 11-12 years

Our rottweiler is a 4 year old desexed male named Marley. He was the biggest boof in a litter of 13. He stayed leggy & narrow until the last 6 months when he started to broaden quite a bit.

Unfortuneately he has a flaw, snipey nose, which means his nose is narrower & longer than it should be.

He is the most loving & gentle dog a person could find. He is a sook and frequently scares himself. I cant imagine him protecting us, but his appearance & bark is enough to deter people who dont know him. He is incredibly lazy but loves going for long walks & to the beach (although he thinks he'll drown if his feet dont touch the bottom.)

Marley was wilfull as a pup but obedience training helped with that. He is now very obedient unless we are at the park and other dogs are around. Then, if he's off lead, he wont come when called until he is ready. He loves people, dogs and gets on well with our 5 cats.

He is very precious to our family.

I have a 4 yo female Rotty. Her name is Michie. We brought her from a breeder and she was actually the runt of the litter but you certainly wouldn't know that from looking at her now.

Just recently my Rottweiler has bulked up quite a bit. She eats alot we give her a 1.2kg can of dog food and bread and dry food. She is very energetic and loves going for a swim in lake we have nearby. She absolutely loves being around people and playing fetch although she doesn't always want to give the ball up again.
