Saarloos Wolfhound: BREED BOX

Recognition:

The 'Saarloos wolfhoind' (Dutch Saarloos Wolfdog) is a breed of large dogs with relatively wolflike appearance and behavior, such as strong pack instincts.

Starting in 1921, Dutch breeder Leendert Saarloos attempted to breed a dog that would be more amenable to training than the German shepherd. It is somewhat easier to train than other dog breeds more closely related to wolves, in part because the Canadian Timber Wolf, which hunts in packs (thereby giving it more interest in working as a team), was included in its background rather than the Carpathian Wolf, which hunts alone. However, the original goal has not been achieved.

This breed was first officially recognised in 1975.

We have had our saarloos Wolfhound for over 2 years. We raised him on a bottle when he (Prince) was only a week old. He is great with our cats & our 6 year old daughter. I couldnt ask for a better dog. Prince is protective & very freindly, everyone who sees him falls in love with him, he is bigger the a shepherd (abought 275 pds) he is also pure white. We would like to find a female saarloos Wolfhound so we can breed them, they are the best dogs you will ever own.

I got my Wolfhound at the local pound. He is highly intelligent and accompamnies me to work. He is as lovable as any dog I have known but very territorial. Gets along great with cats, children and all family members.

I am personally greatly in love with my Saarloos an wouldn't take another dog in replacement of it ever. He (MIELES) has been with me going on 6 years & has never turned on me or any one who has entered my doors. However it should'nt be taken for granted because they are very capable of doing great danger to another animal or person(I've witnessed it). Their temperment is somwhat that of the Chow, aloof and independent great characteristics for a dog in my opinion...not 2 much grooming nessesary, chaining in the backyard during the day is enough exercise(with occassional walks) he eats a 50lb bag of dog food in about 2-3weeks and he's very high on protection of me an my children. Great, great animal!!!!!

Now I have had my saarloos for 3 years. And it was a wonderfull dog. But I will not recomend it for first time dog owners because it is more special than ordinary dogs.

but i think it's a better dog than the German Shepherd I used to have. You got to have so much patience with the Saarloos Wolfhound .

Saarloos Wolfdogs are shy of strangers but are devoted to their family. They bark to warn you, but do not make as good as watchdog as the German Shepherd. They need exercise because they are large dogs and need alot of food due to their size. Height: 24-29 inches. Weight: 80-95 lbs.
