The Saluki is a member of the sighthound family, ie. hounds that hunt by sight rather than scent. The saluki is one of the oldest breeds known today, and originally came from the Middle East, where it was used (and is still used to some extent) by the Bedouins for hunting hare and gazelle.

Salukis are NOT for everyone!

Salukis are one of the most wonderful breeds of dog... for people who understand them and can deal with all their little oddities. They ARE very loyal, very affectionate to their family, very fast and very clean dogs. They ARE NOT easily trained, have NO roadsense whatsoever and will chase anything that moves... including other smaller dogs and animals, right into traffic or miles through the forest/field if let off leash.

They are not a dog for everybody as they are extremely strong willed and do not take too readily to conventional training methods. They do not take well to harsh reprimands as they are extremely sensitive animals and will introvert if treated harshly. They are bred for hunting and may possibly evenl kill any smaller animal they have been chasing... which they WILL usually catch.

Saluki puppies are very destructive and many adults can be very accomplished thieves.. NOTHING in the house is safe. Good, sturdy (and high) fencing is a must as is a very patient and loving owner. Salukis do not like the cold, nor do they like being on their own so must be allowed in the house and must be part of the family. They are NOT a yard dog! Despite all their "cons"... Why do I have Salukis then??... For ME.. they are amazing, beautiful creatures... but I will be the first to admit (and indeed INSIST).. they are NOT the dog for everyone.

I have 2 rescue Saluki and I will never know why they were abandonned. Definately a dog for all people, one minute they think they"re a dog, then a cat, then a human.

Every day is different but underneath it all they are the worlds biggest sucks, happy to run around like a twit when its walk time, ready to snuggle on your lap while watching a movie. I will never buy a another type of dog again!

I have recently had the pleasure of adopting a Saluki. He really is the most amazingly sweet dog. He was dumped on a motorway and then sadly run over by a lorry so lost one of his rear legs. This was five weeks ago and he is coping brilliantly. After taking a few days to get to know me and my other dog Khan, he has become a very affectionate, gentle and humourous member of our family. He loves his walks though would quite happily slob out in front of the TV for much of the day.

Considering what he has been through, he is so trusting and enthusiastic about EVERYTHING, particularly nipping to our local pub where he is proving to be a real lady-killer.
