Scottish Terrier
History - This hardy dog’s origin sits in mystery. An early way of thinking about the terrier group was to call all terriers from Scotland, Scottish Terriers. Some believe that the first Scottish Terrier originated from the Isle of Skye, an island situated off the west coast to Scotland. Bred to be hunting dogs, the Scottish Terrier possesses a keen nose for scenting and a high prey drive. Because of the confusing beginning with many different breeds of terriers coming into the line, in the 1870’s clear lines were finely formed about what the breed standard should look like. The first Scottish Terrrier arrived in America in 1883 slowly gaining popularity until WWII when Franklin D. Roosevelt appeared on the scene with his Scottish Terrier, Fala. FDR and Fala were inseperable, and rumors abounded about this dog during FDR’s time as President of the United States. One rumor was so disturbing to FDR that in a speech to the Teamsters in 1940 he debunked the rumor that he had sent a battleship back to an island to retrieve Fala who (it was said) misplaced there. When FDR died, Fala grieved, and when she died, she was buried next to the only master she loved. There is a statue of FDR and Fala in Washington D.C. making this Scottish Terrier, the most famous dog in the world. Description - Devoted to family, this feisty terrier is always ready for activity. The Scottish Terrier needs to be taken on long walks, be mentally stimulated and can tolerate being outdoors in warmer climates. This dog is not tolerant of heat, due to the long dense undercoat. When bored, the Scottish Terrier is prone to digging and barking. Short in stature, big boned and muscled this dog is fun in the home and in the show-ring. Scottish Terrier Reviews
