History - According to breed founder, Tina Barber, the Shiloh Shepherd is the ideal German shepherd dog. Strong, noble, big- boned and good-hearted, for her and others, the Shiloh Shepherd stands above all the rest.

Larger than the now easily recognizable American version of the German Shepherd Dog, the Shiloh Shepherd’s appearance is based on all German lines- Deininghauserheide- Liebestraum-Osnabruckerland and Piastendamm; leading to a stocky, well-muscled dog with a broad back, and broad head, that is in keeping with the proportion of the body.

Appearance - On a true Shiloh Shepherd, the muzzle should be a dominant black with the length equal to the forehead. His back should be strong, legs well-muscled. The Shiloh Shepherd should be of good temperament and easily trainable as well as intelligent.

The coat comes in two different styles, plush (long-hair) or smooth coat. Ms. Barber maintains that the Shiloh Shepherds of the plush variety have a lower incidence of hip dysplasia than the smooth coats. Since hip dyplasia is a major concern for any German shepherd dog lover, this claim has helped to accelerate interest in this still-developing breed.

Description - The American Kennel Club does not, as of this writing, recognize the Shiloh Shepherd as a registered breed. According to Ms. Barber “The AKC considers the Shiloh Shepherd to be “a deviation of the German Shepherd dog.”

The Shiloh Shepherd is still considered a rare breed in the United States. To overcome this obstacle, the International Shiloh Shepherd Registry was created in 1974. Since its inception, the main group has split off and formed “splinter” groups who according to the breed founder are largely responsible for polluting the lines.

Regardless of the politics surrounding the Shiloh Shepherd, the owners of these dogs enthusiastically agree that for temperament, devotion and faithfulness, the Shiloh Shepherd is for them, the only Shepherd they will ever own.

Life Expectancy: 11 years

Smooth coats shed year round and should be brushed twice a week, Plush coats only shed twice a year but should be brushed regularly to avoid matting. Bathing should not be done very often so that the skins oils are not depleted. A large, fenced yard is ideal as Shilohs love to run and dig. They are very sweet in temperment and sometimes shy. They are an inside dog and should not be used as a watchdog although they will protect their family if necessary. They eat 5 to 6 cups or more of food a day. Shiloh Shepherd makes great family pets.
