History - This elegant, streamlined little dog looks like a miniature greyhound, and indeed, it is closely related. Until 1891 it was not recognised as a separate breed, although a Whippet like dog had appeared in art from as early as the 17th century, and was used to hunt small animals such as rabbits. Developed by interbreeding between the greyhound and terriers, the Whippet became a favorite racing dog among lower classes in England during the 19th century, and was known as 'the poor mans greyhound'. In America the center of Whippet racing was originally in Massachusetts, but today is more popular in southern states.

Appearance - The Whippet is extremely light for its height. Its long, graceful limbs and thin, streamlined silhouette show that it is built to run, and it has been known to reach 35 miles per hour! Standing 18" to 22" and weighing 12 to 28 lbs, the well balanced body leads back to powerful, muscular hind legs, the head is thin with large dark eyes and small, folded ears. The muzzle is long, quite thin and strong, giving a hint of its hunting dog origins. The coat is short and smooth, and often quite thin, meaning that these dogs will suffer from cold in extreme climates, and need to be kept warm. They require very little grooming, and can be rubbed down after exercise much in the same way as a horse. Whippets can be any color, or combination of colors.

Description - This dog makes a good pet when properly brought up. It is a sensitive and intelligent breed, and usually responds well to training, although its natural tendency to chase small prey can lead to it running off, and care should be taken near roads. It needs plenty of exercise, of course, and will not really be happy in a small apartment.

Ideal Owners: Suited for most situations. Good companion for children (over 10)

Coat Color: Any Color

Life Expectancy: 12-14 years

We purchased a whippet puppy (male, black) 5 weeks ago and our whole family is absolutely thrilled. It is only 13 weeks old, and seems to adapt to any situation remarkably well. It has all the typical characteristics of a whippet - affectionate. friendly, intelligent, obidient. It is not at all shy or nervous with new people or dogs, which is a characteristic that many people associate with the breed. It already seems to be incredibly attached to everyone in our family. It will curl up by our feet, or snuggle up close to us on the couch. I cannot imagine a dog with a more desirable temperament.
